Share It Saturday

Hello friends!!  I am so excited to have my Facebook page up and running, and I am SO CLOSE to getting 100 Likes!!  What an incredible milestone that would be for me to reach, and you KNOW I'll be celebrating as soon as I do!!  If you haven't already done so, I invite you to come 'Like' my Kindergarten Dragons Facebook page.  You can get an EXCLUSIVE freebie by clicking on the FANS Only tab!!

Today is my Share It Saturday, where I like to share with you different amazing gems I have found throughout the week!!  Pretty much anything and everything I find that I think is 'share-worthy', I'm going to tell you about on Saturdays!!  :-)

One of my goals for this upcoming school year is to be more organized, with EVERYTHING!!! So I have been collecting resources that will help me do that!

This AMAZING bundle is from Schroeder Shenanigans in 2nd and contains plenty of resources to help me organize my blog, my TPT store, and my weekly team planning sessions!!  Click on the picture above to go to her TPT Store and get your own bundle!!

One other thing I wanted to share with you was a techy tip that my new friend Kayla from Mrs. King's Kinders shared with me!!

See, I was commenting on new friend's pages and never got any kind of response.  I just assumed everybody was really busy.  Nope.  Kayla let me know that, when she tried to respond to one of my comments, she got a 'noreply blogger' message.  I had no idea this was even happening!!  Not only was she kind enough to let me know, but she also sent me a link to where I could go learn how to correct the problem!!
I followed the link from Kayla to a lovely blog called Anyone Can Decorate, and she had an awesome post about fixing the no-reply blogger problem!!  If you have this problem, or if you aren't sure if you have this problem, click on the picture above to go over to her blog post about it!!  I'm so very glad that my new friend Kayla shared this with me!!!

One more thing I wanted to share with you.  Some of you may know my obsession with all things Crayola, so when I found out about this you KNOW I had to 'Follow All'!!!
They have SO MANY awesome boards with great crafty pins on each!!  If you want to follow Crayola on Pinterest, just click on the picture above!!

Don't forget about my GIVEAWAY!!!  Wednesday is the last day to enter!!

Five for Friday and a Friday FREEBIE!!

Today I am linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for her Five for Friday linky party.  Stay with me til the end, 'cause there's a freebie in it for you!!

Number graphics are created by Mel from Graphics From the Pond.
I have been hard at work enjoying my summer vacation, have you??  :-)  I know that some of my new friends are already back in school, but I have a few more weeks left.  I have been spending a lot of time with my baby niece, and it's awesome to get my 'baby fix' and then give her back to her mom at the end of the day!!  :-)
It's her first baby selfie!! I let her play around with my phone (anything to keep her happy!!) and next thing I new she was taking selfies!!  :-)  Love her!!

I have to get my baby fix 'cause I'm not a mommy yet.  Well, not to a two-legged baby anyway.  On Monday I celebrated the third birthday of my furbaby, Isis.  I just love her to pieces.  She has always been a great listener, and an industrial-strength chewer (ugh).  She never judges me, never stops loving me, and no one in my life has EVER been that happy to see me when I walk through the door.
This is one of my favorite pictures, because she is really not this shy and laid back!!  :-)  She is definitely a handful and a huge ball of energy.  She also has severe separation anxiety whenever she is left alone.
I came home to this one day after work.  Honestly, I had several occasions where I questioned my sanity in keeping this dog.  She was well-trained as long as she was with someone, but leave her alone and very, very bad things happen.  Luckily she grew out of many of her destructive behaviors, and since moving she isn't alone every day, which has drastically improved her separation anxiety.  Case in point, since moving the extent of her damage is a wooden pencil she found on the floor.  That was at the very beginning of the move, and nothing has happened since.  Hopefully that means she's happy!!  :-)

This summer, I have had the chance to spend a lot of time working on my blog, TPT store, and even created a Facebook page.  I'm grateful for the chance to work on them, and am glad I have had a chance to be so creative.  To me, doing things like that is therapeutic and helps me relax.  For my blog, I have been trying to link up with as many different linky parties as I can.  Not only are they so fun to do, it is a great way to increase traffic to my blog.  Plus I get to 'meet' so many wonderful people and learn so many great ideas.  One of my favorite linky parties so far has to be Deanna Jump's Book Talk Tuesday.  This is such a wonderful opportunity to get to learn about the incredibly wide array of literature out there, as well as how different educators have used such literature effectively in their classrooms.  It is also a chance for me to get to share some of my favorite literary gems!!  Anyone who has been reading my blog for a while knows how obsessed I am with books, so this linky is a perfect fit for me.  This past Book Talk Tuesday I got to share two of my favorite beginning of the year books, PLUS host my very first giveaway!!  I'm excited to branch out into the world of hosting giveaways, and I hope I am able to do many more!!  If you haven't entered my giveaway yet, make sure to click on the picture below to take you to my giveaway post so that you can enter via Rafflecopter!!

Since there are so many changes coming up at my school for the next couple of years, we were given the opportunity to meet as a team for an all-day paid summer-planning session.  Honestly, I don't know why anyone would say no to this!!!  So my team met on Wednesday.  We are four members strong this year.  Our newest team mate will be in her first year of kindergarten, after starting teaching pre-k last November.  My other two team mates are celebrating their second year in kindergarten, and I my fourth.  We got the first two weeks of school planned out, which is AWESOME!!  However, while we were filling in our newest teamie on the things she would need to set up her classroom, it hit me that I haven't done ANYTHING about my classroom decor yet!!  I have done TONS of work with my blog, TPT store, and even Facebook page, but had neglected my own Extreme Classroom Makeover.  Luckily I don't report back to school until mid-August, so I have some time to get things done.  So far, I have tackled behavior management and a classroom alphabet line. Here are some shots of what I have done so far.
I'm trying to keep them as uniform as possible.  I used the same 'kinder-friendly' font for all of the letters and included handwriting lines for them to see the formations. The borders are all the same, and I use the same two dragon pictures.  I wanted the vowels to stand out so I made them red, and included two different pictures because I want them to understand the vowels have two different sounds.
I have a bit of a dilemma though.  I know that the letters 'C' and 'J' have two different sounds, but I haven't decided if I should include pictures for both sounds of those letters.  Will this confuse my kinders into thinking 'C' and 'J' are vowels, or will this confuse them when they are trying to sound out their words while writing?  Is it better to make sure they understand the letters have two sounds, or just expose them to the fact that they do?  I've almost talked myself into including two pictures for the two different sounds of 'C' and 'J' but would LOVE to hear your thoughts on this!!
I also wanted to include pictures of words they might not be familiar with, or may not have realized begin with a certain letter.  Sometimes my kinders will hear a 'letter' at the beginning of a word instead of a sound, and assume the word starts with the incorrect letter.  For example, when they hear the word 'envelope', many of my kinders hear the /en/ and assume that represents the letter 'N'.  I want them to begin to understand how tricky the language can be.

Something else that I created to go with my dragon theme are behavior calendars.  Every month my kinders get a new calendar, and this calendar goes home in their folders every night.  It 'lives' in their folder, which means it should never-ever be taken out to stay at home.  I use a color-coded clip-chart as part of my behavior management system, and my kinders color in the box for the day's date on their behavior calendar to match what color they landed on at the end of the day.  On the back of the calendars is an explanation of our color system.  In the past I have just used generic calendars I created in Notebook software.  This year I wanted my calendars to represent my theme, so I made some!  :-)  I have represented each month with it's own page from August 2014 through August 2015.  My kinders will use these to track their daily behavior, and they provide a way for their grown-ups to monitor their behavior at school.  If you're interested, or know anyone who might be, you can have these dragon-themed monthly behavior calendars FOR FREE!!  :-)

Remember, they have dragons on them!!  :-)  When my kinders start using them, I'll be sure to post pictures!!  I'll even be keeping a set as my own personal calendar.  :-)  Remember that goal of mine to be more organized this year?  I am hard at work creating my very own Teacher Toolkit, which is a binder divided into different sections that are important to my school year running smoothly.  As it comes together, I'll be sure to share it with you!!  :-)

I hope you are having a FABULOUS Friday and an even better weekend!!  If you had to go back to school already, just remember you'll be getting out WAY before I do for the summer!!  :-)  Also, don't forget to go back and click on the link for Five for Friday and Freebie Friday to go get some other great ideas and freebies!!

p.s. - The cute numbers graphics I used are from Mel at Graphics from the Pond and are a FREEBIE of hers!!

back 2 school linky party

Thursday is here, and that means that the end of the month is creeping closer and closer!  I know that some of my fellow educators are headed back to school this week, or they have already been back.  I hope that your school year is everything that you want it to be!!  :-)

Today I am linking up with Mrs. D's Corner and Miss V's Busy Bees for Week 2 of their back 2 school weekly linky party.

This week's topic is assessments, and I am SO GLAD I'll be able to get some awesome tips, tricks, and advice from other teachers through this linky!!  You see, in our district, we are going through a whole lot of changes.  We've been doing the Common Core for going on four years now, so that's nothing new.  However, the assessments at the state and county level are changing, so there will be tests that we need to give that we never have before.  The 'big kids' [grades 3-5] will be taking a new test called PARCC (Partnership for the Readiness for Colleges and Careers), prekindergarten is moving away from report cards and giving a new assessment three times a year, and kindergarten is getting a brand new assessment called KRA (Kindergarten Readiness Assessment) and it will be given entirely on an iPad.  We have never had iPads before and I know nothing about this test yet.  I go for training in mid-August, when I will get assigned an iPad and learn all about how to give this test.

As well as the new kindergarten KRA, we are required to give the ELS (Emerging Literacy Survey) three times as a year, as well as a math benchmark twice a year.  Those are the tests we HAVE to give.

In my classroom, I use several different types of assessment.  In kindergarten we use a 2-3-4 grading scale, with a wide percentage range for each score.  I also do a whole lot of observation, including listening to the conversations they have with each other.  Sometimes there is a student product, which ranges from a cut and paste activity to a research report completed on the computer.  I also really enjoy having them keep a writing journal.  Thanks to the awesomeness of Daily 5 last year, every one of my kinders was writing in their journals at least once a week.  This was a GREAT way for me to informally asses their writing progress every week!!!

One of my goals this year is to be more organized, and having a central location for assessing their kindergarten skills is really going to help with that.  Enter this AMAZING freebie from Tammy at Live, Love, Laugh Kindergarten. OH. EM. GEE.  This FREEBIE is an ever-growing packet of kindergarten assessment sheets that can be kept in a binder right at my guided reading area and I can reference them whenever I need to.  These sheets can help me gain a better, and deeper, understanding of what my kinders excel at as well as what they need a bit more practice with. <click on the picture to go to her blog and read all about it, plus get your own!>
So far, Tammy has included uppercase and lowercase assessment sheets as well as a recording sheet for student results.
Tammy is going to be adding to this packet in the coming weeks, so that it will include beginning sounds, colors, shapes, numbers, etc.  Make sure you check back weekly to add a new set of sheets to the notebook!!!

Don't forget that I am having a giveaway for my latest creation!!  It is a great set of alphabet activities to use with a few of my favorite ABC books, and it can be used during the beginning of the year in kindergarten, during the year in pre-k, and for Response to Intervention (RTI) for first grade.  You have until next Wednesday to enter!!!

Wish List Wednesday

Happy Hump Day!!  Sorry about the late post tonight, but I spent the day at school for a summer planning session with my team.  We have four kindergarten teachers this year, which is new for us.  You might remember I mentioned our school is absorbing half of a local elementary school that is closing for remodeling so our teams this year have changed and grown, and many of us have never worked together before.  We are also absorbing half of the student population, so our class sizes will grow.  After two years, the other elementary school is proposed to be finished. Lots of changes!!  Our school was able to provide a paid summer time team planning day, and my team met this morning.  We were able to completely plan the first week of school and create an outline for the second week.  SHEW, that's a stress relief for the beginning of the year!!  We don't have to take any precious time during those first few days of school before the kids come back to plan since we already got a chance to, so we can focus on making sure our rooms are completely ready for our kinders.  I'm excited, and very glad that we got so much planned!!  I feel like I am starting the year off on a good note, and that I am doing a good job of maintaining my goal to be more organized this year!!
Clipart created by Krista from The Creative Chalkboard.
For anyone new to my blog this week, welcome and thanks for following!!!  YAY YOU!!  :-)  On Wednesdays I like to share with you items from my Wish List.  They could be items from any Wish List I have, TPT or 'real-life', as well as any Wishes I granted myself.  One of my most exciting so far was my trip to the Crayola Factory!!  You can read about my Crayola Experience by clicking on the picture below.

This week I want to share with you some Wishes I granted myself from my TPT list.  What with launching my Facebook page, reorganizing my Pinterest boards, and celebrating my blog's first birthday, I felt in the mood to grant some Wishes.  Here's what I got!

All numbers are clipart designed by Mel from Graphics From the Pond.
This awesome little bundle is from Literacy Without Worksheets and is going to help me with my goal to be more organized this school year!!  This packet is really amazing!!  It has TONS of editable pages to help you develop charts and groups, as well as keep track of your lessons and data.  I'm really glad I got this during the summer, so I have time to play around with it and make it fit my classroom and needs.  SO EXCITED!!!

I purchased this INCREDIBLY FANTASTIC resource from Kreative in Kinder and I am SUPER EXCITED about it!!  Since I am planning on launching Writer's Workshop this year in my room, this packet is going to be a HUGE help!!  It was created BY a kindergarten teacher FOR kindergarten teachers, and I love all the step-by-step directions!!  Another win!!

Seeing as how 2D and 3D shapes are such a huge part of the kindergarten curriculum, I was stoked when I found this AMAZING set of clipart from Ashley Hughes.  How perfect are these graphics for helping my kinders make real-world connections to the shapes!!  I can't wait to start creating with them!!

One of the things I want to work on this year is making my Word Wall more interactive.  I have decided to change the location of my Word Wall in my room and move it to a larger space.  Also, I found this fantastic packet of Word Wall Center activities created by Reagan Tunstall!!  They are a perfect fit for ANY word all, and are super-fun too!!  My kinders will work on these during the Word Work time of Daily 5!!  I'm sure this packet will help my Word Wall to become a center point in my room!!

Book Talk Tuesday, a Freebie, AND a Giveaway

Hey everyone!!  I'm here today to link up with Deanna Jump's Book Talk Tuesday linky party.  I've had so much fun with this linky, getting to share my favorite books and learning about the favorite books of other teachers.  Make sure that you check it out for yourself!!

Today I am going to share TWO books, since they go so very well together.  They are both creations of the author/illustrator Dave Horowitz and are GREAT to use for the beginning of the year.

A favorite choice of kindergarten boys....

and a favorite choice of kindergarten girls!

I just LOVE these books!!  Each letter of the alphabet is given a page in the story, combined with a pirate/princess whose name starts with that letter.  Also, each sentence ends in a word that rhymes with the name of the pirate/princess.  So many phonics lessons!!

Let's take a look at Twenty-six Pirates:

Check out the illustrations!!  Look at the details in the faces of the characters and the faces of the frogs.  Can't you just imagine the discussions you can have?  For instance, why does Doug need a hug?  How can you tell he is sad?  Do you think Earl is scared to be up in the crow's nest {vocabulary opportunity}?  Also, the letter being focused on is hidden in the page somewhere.  Sometimes it's easy to find, sometimes not.  I just love how the illustrations can help teach littles to look at the pictures to help them understand the story.

Before you even read the words on this page, ask them what they think Lee's problem is.  I bet they can tell you, 'cause they have felt that way before too!!  Ask them how the frogs feel about seeing Mark the shark, and ask if they think the frogs know it's not a real shark.

There are perfect opportunities for them to express their opinions, as well.  Do you think Roy is a dangerous {vocabulary opportunity} boy?  Do you think Samson is really all that handsome?  {vocabulary opportunity}

The end of the story shows all of the pirates on board the Sea Princess, and this provides a great opportunity to see if students remember the events in the story.  Point to a random pirate and ask if anyone remembers his name or what he was doing in the story.  You can count up the pirate with the littles, and ask them why there are 26 and not 27.

Next up is Twenty-six Princesses:

This book is set up exactly like the pirates version.  Each letter of the alphabet is given a page, and each sentence ends in a word that rhymes with the name of the princess.  Just like in the pirates version, the illustrations lead to many great discussions.  There is also lots of vocabulary in the story to talk about with your kinders.  Take these two pages.  You can have a great discussion about why they think Dot is not considered a lady and if she seems to care, and how they frog feels about Elle's yells.

This is a great chance to compare characters in similar situations.  Both of these princesses are out in the rain, but they both feel very differently about it.  Have the littles study the faces of each princess and ask why they think Heather is happy in the rain and Isabella is not.  You can even ask them this before you read the words on the pages.

At the end of the story, all the princesses are gathered together in the ball room.  You can help kinders retell the story by asking them to identify the princesses by name and/or what they were doing in the story.

Aren't these books AWESOME!!  If you want a copy for yourself (of course mine came from Scholastic) you can head over to Amazon by clicking the pictures of the covers of the book at the top of this post.

I enjoy these books so much that I had to create an activity to go with it.  I had an idea in mind but I was having a hard time brining it to life.  Then one day I was unpacking groceries and was about to put away my variety pack of mini-cereal boxes when it hit me.  I can use these boxes to create an activity that my kinders can work on during Word Work time of the Daily 5.  Here's what I did.

First, I gathered the materials I would need.

If you've been with me for a while, you know how much I LOVE the different patterns of Duck Tape out there.  I gathered some of my favorites for this little DIY.

Next, I cut off the tops of all the mini-cereal boxes.

After removing the tabs, I began to cover each box with Duck Tape.  I used the same style of Duck tape for every two boxes, so there would be a matching pair when I finished.  That's important, you need a matching pair!!  It helps the littles follow directions when they can grab the two boxes that are the same.

It took three layers of tape before I felt the boxes were sturdy enough to stand up to little hands, as well as completely covering up the graphics on the boxes.  Here's the finished product.

Remember, you need two styles of each!!  After the taping is finished, attach a small piece of Velcro to the front of each box.  This will allow you to easily swap out the letter tags as you learn about different letters.

For one of the activities I made, attache a pirate or princess uppercase and matching lowercase letter to the two matching boxes.  The uppercase B would go on the other tie-dye covered box.  Students can put the letters on themselves.  I have a plan to keep the letter boxes and envelopes/baggies of the letter of the week we're working on in a large basket.  Students can get two boxes and grab an envelope.  The pirate/princess tags go on the boxes, and the smaller letter cards are what they will use to sort.  Print out the letter cards on different colors of construction paper and then laminate.

These cards don't need Velcro on them, only the pirate/princess ABC cards to use as labels.  I haven't decided if I'm going to glue these to milk bottle lids before the kinders use them, just to give them extra durability, or if I'm just going to leave them as cards.  Guess it'll depend on how much time I have at the beginning of the year!!

Each letter comes with self-check keys, so that the kinders can check their sorting.  I'm going to keep these in a location I can watch, so that I can tell if kinders are running right over to get the answer keys before they even start the activity!  You could laminate them and have the littles color in a check mark as they check their answers, or you could print them on paper and create a small book that littles could keep as a reference.

I tried to use as many fonts as I could, and that each letter buddy was in a matching font.  When littles are done sorting and checking, I've included an assessment they can complete and that will let you know how well they understand the uppercase and lowercase letters.

This awesome little sorting activity is only ONE of the many activities I have included in this 171 page activity, and I've only included two of my favorite ABC books.  Here are a few of the other standards I've covered in this packet:

I included a few of the words from each book on color and B&W vocabulary cards.

This standard comes complete with teacher and student labels and cards to sort the tools of an author and those of an illustrator.

There are discussion pages I've included, as well as a student response sheets.

This standard comes with a class book you can make with your littles that is modeled after the pirate/princess books.

Have I gotten you interested yet??  I worked hard on this pack, and I plan on adding more of my favorite ABC books and activities to go with them.  Make sure you grab a copy while the price is at it's lowest!!  Click on the picture below to go to my TPT store, and if you download the Preview you get a freebie of the letter A princess sorting activity.

Finally, I'm having my VERY FIRST GIVEAWAY!!  Just enter using the Rafflecopter below, and I will choose two random winners next Tuesday.  You will win a copy of the packet, as well as any and all future updates I make to this packet.  Plus, if you're interested, I will even throw in six of the mini-cereal boxes that you can use with this packet.  You can pick the styles from what I've already made!!  Good luck, and I hope you're as excited about my first giveaway as I am!!
